The Wavy Wall Art App lets you create 3D artwork to hang on your wall. Your design is made of 2D slats, cut at different heights and mounted side by side on a backing board, so together they form a wavy relief. You can also add your own image, which is carved from a separate material and set into the slats.
Opening the Wavy Wall Art App
Click the Apps icon (1) in the left toolbar, then choose Wavy Wall Art (2). You can also find it under More Apps in the App Library.
The Wavy Wall Art window
1. Settings tabs
The settings are split across four tabs: General, Pattern, Image and Advanced. Each one is described below.
2. Pattern, Shuffle and Wave Count
Choose a pattern: Waves, Ripple, Lattice, Terrain, Eddy or Echo. Click Shuffle to try different variations of it, and use Wave Count to set how many waves run across the design.
3. Paint colors
Choose a paint color for the Slats, the Backing and, if you add one, the Image. The preview updates so you can see how the finished piece will look. The line underneath shows the number of slats, the size of the wave and backing, and how many material sheets you'll need.
4. Generate
Click Generate. Easel creates the workpieces and arranges the slats across your material sheets automatically. Tabs are placed only on hidden flat edges, so they won't show on the finished piece.
Settings tabs
General
- Overall Width and Overall Height: The size of the finished piece.
- Relief Depth Min and Max: How far the slats stand out from the backing, at their lowest and highest points.
- Slat Material and Slat Cutout Bit: The material and bit for the slats, plus the material's Thickness, Sheet Width and Sheet Height.
- Backing Material and Backing Cutout Bit: The same settings for the backing board.
Pattern
Fine-tune the pattern with the sliders: Drift, Depth, Scale, Move X, Move Y, Rotation and Edge Fade. Click Reset adjustments to go back to the defaults.
Image (optional)
Check Add image, then click Choose File to upload an SVG, PNG or JPG. If you don't upload one, the Easel logo is used. Easel traces the image, carves it from a separate material and cuts a matching pocket into the slats, so the artwork drops into place for gluing.
- Style: How the image sits in the design, for example Flat piece on a calm pad, or pieces that follow the wave profile.
- Image Material, Image Cutout Bit and Thickness: The material and bit for the image pieces.
- Image Width and Image Padding: The size of the image and the space around it.
- Offset X and Offset Y: Move the image away from the center of the design.
Advanced
- Slat Gap: The space between slats.
- Backing Margin: How far the backing extends past the slats.
- Frame Board and Board Orientation: The board size used for the frame, and whether it lies flat or on edge.
- Stretch to fit: What to do when the slats don't divide evenly into the width. Click the ? for details.
- Drill mounting holes: Adds holes for hanging the piece.
- Fit Tolerance: Extra clearance so parts fit together.
- Additional cut depth: Cuts slightly deeper than the material thickness to make sure parts cut all the way through.
Assembling your wall art
- Ordering marks: Easel engraves a mark on the hidden side of each slat, so you know where each one goes.
- Mounting: Each slat has hidden hooks on its back. Pass the hooks through the slots in the backing and drop the slat down to lock it in place. No visible fasteners are needed.
- Hanging: The backing's slots work like a french cleat. Turn on Drill mounting holes on the Advanced tab if you also want holes for hanging.
